Beyond Technology Education’s project-based curriculum builds computer science and literacy skills in the areas of:
- Presentation Design
- Creative Communication
- Analytical Problem Solving
- Computer Programming
While the Kindergarten and 1st Grade project focus on topics of building good character, the 2nd – 8th Grade projects focus on social responsibility and making good choices.
In the Presentation Design unit, students utilize different tools to design multimedia presentations and develop their digital citizenship knowledge. They will also be introduced to and reviewing concepts in computing systems, the internet, and keyboarding. Grade level projects include multimedia presentations, digital storytelling, voice recording, GIF creation, and video production.
In the Creative Communication unit, students create, edit and complete documents using word processing and graphic design skills. Examples of grade level projects include informative writing, booklets, comic strips, choose-your-own adventure books, escape room, and blogging, and website design.
In the Analytical Problem Solving unit, students practice complex problem solving and data analysis using spreadsheet and database skills. Grade level projects use data tables, surveys, charts, and advanced formulas to create budget or health goal projects.
In the Computer Programming unit, students will engage their computational thinking skills by using a programming journal and coding application to the learn the fundamentals of computer programming, such as algorithms and sequences, events, directional movement, decomposition, loops, debugging, variables, and conditionals. Grade level projects on social/emotional choices will be completed in either Scratch or Scratch Jr.
Beyond Technology Education’s Computer Science and Literacy Curriculum is aligned to the California State K-8 Computer Science Standards and the ISTE Standards for Students. It is cross-curricular, tied to the California Common Core Mathematics and Language Arts standards.
